If you are a history buff, a name devotee, enjoy anecdotes or legends this site will certainly satisfy your tastes and interests in New York State Places and how these names originated. The author, William R. Farrell, has spent over 40 years reading, researching, compiling, and teaching the great names which dot the map of the Empire State.
You will find on this site, three books, two of which are completed and the third which is in progress. The content of the three books has been gathered by using primary and secondary sources, securing information from numerous libraries including the Research Library at Cooperstown, located on the campus of the New York State Historical Association, interviewing county, city, town and village historians, librarians, old-timers and other local officials. To date, over 2000 placenames have been researched while others are being considered. All entries are accompanied by maps, many have illustrations and other features relevant to the community. The reader will better understand not only what each name means, but its location in the great State of New York.
